Singer-songwriter IRIS released her new song “Burgundy” on July 16, sharing her experience with unapologetically following her heart in relationships.

“Burgundy” was created alongside Grammy award-winning producer Malay, writer Trey Campbell, engineer Michelle Mancini and mixer Raul Lopez. IRIS debuted the track at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, part of Writer’s Block Events, which help bring exposure to up-and-coming songwriters. “Burgundy” is now streaming on all platforms.

IRIS said working with Campbell and Malay has helped her open up and explain her feelings, as she started out as artists typically do: vulnerable and scared to open up to people. She said she is shy when she first meets people, but as she gets to know them, she is unafraid to go out of the box with her emotions and creative instincts. IRIS’s music is evolving as she becomes more open with her feelings, and Campbell and Malay are working with her every step of the way through her career.

“We are all in a creative place,” IRIS said. “Having that trust and feeling comfortable with each other helps with the creative process.”

“Burgundy” is a rock/indie/pop, genre-bending track about naive love. IRIS sings the lyrics with such soul and passion, leaving listeners feeling moved. When she writes with Campbell and Malay, they work to make everything come together, from the guitar strums, to her stunning vocals, in order to reflect the emotion of the song.

“When it comes to relationships and life, I go all in,” IRIS said. “I don’t hold back. I can’t do it halfway.”

IRIS said the themes and lyrics of her songs are not always about her own personal struggles. Sometimes she sees family members or close friends going through situations that inspire her to make a song. She said the creative process of a song typically starts with Malay picking up a guitar.

A big inspiration of IRIS’s for her melancholy track “Burgundy” was “Lost On You” by LP. The up-and-coming, genre-bending artist said LP inspires her because her voice is so soulful and powerful. IRIS wanted her fans to hear the same passion and soul people hear when listening to LP.

“She’s got this grit to her,” IRIS said. “I wanted to have something like that too.”

IRIS used to be in an indie rock band, Linus Young, so she has a lot of indie rock influences in her solo career. She said she always tries to incorporate sounds she enjoys, which is why she will never be boxed into one genre. She enjoys classic rock, as well pop and the new age of alternative music. Her favorite acts go from Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd, to Britney Spears, to Tame Impala and so on. You can hear her broad mixture of influences in every track she releases.

Naive love leaves you always assuming the best from people, and staying positive through ups and downs because you have a gut feeling a person is right for you. IRIS said she believes everyone is guarded in some ways, but we should follow our hearts. She would rather know that she at least tried to make something work than regret not trying.

“I wear my heart on my sleeve when it comes to love,” IRIS said.

“Burgundy” is out on all platforms. IRIS said she is excited to write more, and she plans to release more songs in the near future. She will be hosting a livestream performance on her Instagram on August 19.
