Daily Dose - don’t look by Nikita, the Wicked

Do you remember those days, in 2014, 2015, when you would sit on your computer in your bedroom, Youtube’s suggested section on playlist shuffle mode, bumping EDM banger after EDM banger? That “Tennis Court” Flume, stank face, “oh my god, what is this and how have I never heard it before.” Nikita, the Wicked’s new track, “don’t look,” brought me back to those days, and to that nostalgia. The song features a house structure, but the synths and overall production is reminiscent of that future bass era that acts like Mona San, Koastle and Bloom Line are bringing back right now. Vocal samplings make up the chorus, making it a booming tune with a focus on that production, and those experimental tones you’ll hear. This is the kind of house you’d want to hear during your montage of Cabo San Lucas Spring Break footage, or while you’re flying down a mountain on the first real snow of the season. It’s definitely got major SSX Tricky energy. It’s fun and cinematic.

Nikita, the Wicked is a 24 year old San Francisco native, and a University of South Carolina alumni. While undergrad, he performed weekly at UoSC’s Cotton Gin under a residency, which allowed him to hone his craft, and become the rising and reputable EDM talent that he is today. Just during the writing process for this arcticle, numerous folks had hit me up and expressed their support for him and his act.

(Edit: San Holo showed his support on our Instagram post for this entry, too!)

The rebirth of Future House has been phenomenal to watch over the past 12 months, with acts like spüke, Rommii and of course, Nikita, the Wicked, becoming powerful torchbearers in the Southern and Northern California rave scene. It is very interesting to see the lore, as a fan and industry nerd, as they mention each other in passing, trade tracks, or perform on the same bill at warehouse shows up and down the western coast. With another upcoming track on March 1, a collab with Fabian Mazur, you all will definitely want to stay tuned for what Nikita the Wicked has in store. This genre is here to stay, and we are lucky to have folks like him moving it forward.

(P.S. also check out “Allons-y”, that thing is a banger, too. You’re welcome in advance)
