VITUHMINS CATCH UP: The Lucky

We caught up with upcoming band The Lucky, who operate out of Los Angeles and recently caught our eye on Spotify with their debut track “Reckless”. To us, The Lucky is what music needs right now: Alternative rock boy bands. This is the kind of music I grew up on: All Time Low, The Band CAMINO, The All-American Rejects, Neckdeep, Fall Out Boy, etc. These are the kind of artists who help you develop an interest in and a love for music at a young age, an interest and a love that might even branch out into other genres, later on. That’s how it happened for me, at least, and I know I’m not alone in that! Yet, in recent years, this kind of music is of a dying breed, and in need of an adrenaline shot. We are confident that The Lucky is here to be just that.

Decker: “Boys! I’m super excited for this interview, not just because of how much I love the music, but also because this is my first interview that I’ll be doing with more than one interviewee. Tell me a little bit about yourselves! 

Tucker, Josh, and Maison: “Awesome! We’re Tucker Click (Frontman), Josh Nardine (Drummer), Maison Thomas-Eudy (Guitarist). We all started at Berkelee College of Music in Massachusetts, in a group called Hand Made House, and we were making some amazing music, but we were also struggling to really brand the band. So, we decided to do a 180, switch things up, and take another swing at it.”

Decker: “Thats awesome! Branding in today’s music world can be a pain in the ass, for real. That kind of leads me to my next question, then: Why “The Lucky”? What’s the significance of your band name?”

*Tucker, Josh, and Maison jokingly argue for a second on who gets to answer first*

Josh: (to Tucker) “Ok, you go first.”

Tucker: “Well, it started off as a joke, because Maison is one of the luckiest people we ever met, he often finds himself in situations where he just… well, in music its really hard to make it, countless hours of practice and work and networking and…well from Josh and my perspective, things just always seemed to fall into his lap, hahahaha.”

Josh: “For real, Maison’ll show up late to class, like half an hour late, on the day of an exam, and when he gets there, nonchalantly strolling in, it turns out the class and exam were both cancelled.”

Tucker: “Exactly! Things will fall into his lap like that, or just end up being ok, even when the heat is on. It’s crazy.”

*Maison smiled through this portion of the interview, in a way that suggested to me that he willingly agrees*

Tucker (cont.): “We wanted the name, and Maison’s luck, to rub off on us, on all of us, and on the projects we make together. But also, we recently heard a phrase that “Luck is just being prepared at the right time.” We felt this phrase really helped depict who we are as musicians, musicians who have been playing together for years and preparing for this big debut for as long as we can remember.”

Decker: “Very cool. So tell me, who are your favorite artists?”

Tucker: “Bon Iver, The 1975, Pheobe Bridgers, The Band CAMINO, and Nothing But Thieves.”

Josh: “We all circulate around the same artists and influences, definitely. I love punk, we all grew up with it, that early 2000’s stuff, so a lot of these artists who got me into drums, are, like, All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, and then yeah, The Band CAMINO.”

Maison: “Re:Nothing But Thieves, they’re definitely one of my favorite bands of all time. Also The Foo Fighters, The Kings of Leon, and Young the Giant.”

Decker: “Hey, I love Young the Giant, too! Great band, great answer. So, what has the been your favorite part of being in The Lucky, so far?”

Tucker: “In the last 6 months, definitely the people we’ve met and the people who we’ve been able to work with. A specific example would be Michael Dunaief, an amazing producer and writer we’ve recently collaborated with, he’s awesome. Also, performing live, for sure. Before we rebranded, we were always performing live, so it’s good to be back to that. It’s definitely a key part of our act, having that energy there.”

Josh: “I think something thats been awesome is that we’re writing in a different way than we have ever written before. I feel like a lot of people have written in this same “band method”, even the Beatles did, where we all have roles (drummer, guitarist, singer :: Ringo, Paul, John, etc), but this time we’re writing with people outside of the band and breaking that mold. We’ve gotten to see how outside identities can influence the art that we make.”

Maison: “Yeah! Right before covid, we also had all this stuff lined up and ready, we had so many shows and sessions planned, it felt like the moment where all the pieces fall into place and we were so excited. So, we’re even more excited to get back to that, knowing that we were almost there before, and knowing that we can make it happen again.”

Decker: “Very cool. So, tell me about this single you have coming out this week?”

Tucker, Josh, and Maison: ‘“Too Little Too Late”! It’s about working too hard to keep people in your life who don’t want to be there, and learning to let those people go. Its sound is wild too. Its not as much different from everything that we’ve done as it is large and loud and stadium-esque. We’re all very excited about it.”

Decker: “I love how a lot of our conversation comes back to live performance. What’s your guys’ favorite venues?”

Masion: “Bar Lubitsch, in LA. It’s got a heart. It’s crazy.”

Josh: “Yeah, I like that spot, the crowds that show up are great, theres definitely a vibe, the fact that you can’t enter the stage without walking through the people you’re going to be playing for is also awesome.”

Tucker: “I also love Bar Lubitsch, but my answer would have to be The Middle East in Boston: It’s not long as it is wide, and so seeing a large crowd like the ones we saw there is awesome. We were like “Ok, awesome, this is it. This is one of our best shows.” People knew our songs and were singing them back to us, and you could see it too.”

Tucker, Josh, Maison: “But all of our backup answers would be house shows in Massachusetts.”

Decker: “Love that. So, what’s next in 5-10, what’s the goal?”

Tucker, Josh, Maison: “We all want to be touring. If we could do an international tour, it would be crazy, but we’d also love to be doing a sold out, headlining, national tour. We also want to put out our first album. We’ve been lining up singles to handle us for the next year and a half for a while now, but we also really wanna be focused on creating a condensed body of work that we can all be proud of.”

Decker: “What’s your guys’ guilty pleasure genres?”

Josh: “Country, like Dan + Shay kind of country. It’s on my Discover Weekly a ton lately so I feel like its trying to tell me, or us, something.”

Maison: “THATS WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY!”

Tucker: “Hahahaha, for me, more emo rap, or Carly Rae Jepson-type music. Nothing in-between.”

Decker: “Awesome. Well, thank you guys again for meeting with me to talk about all this. I’m excited to see you boys do it all. My bonus question for the interview is: “What’s your favorite restaurant?”’

Tucker, Josh, Maison: “Chilis.”

Tucker: “But they got rid of the 3 for 10, now it’s the called the 3 for Me (*he frowns*), it’s another rebrand.”

Josh: “It’s really reflective of the entire economy”

Decker: “What was the one they did at Wendy’s, with the…”

Tucker, Josh, Maison: “…The “4 for 4!” Yeah, thats a classic. Hopefully that stays the same.”
